Three numbers decide whether a frame fits

Every frame carries its size inside the left temple, written as lens width, bridge and temple length. Learn to read it and you can buy with confidence, online or at the counter.

A frame stamped 50-21-145 has a 50 mm lens, a 21 mm bridge and 145 mm temples.

ALens width41 to 60 mm here: The width of one lens at its widest point. It decides how much of your face the frame covers, and it is the first number on the temple.
BBridge15 to 22 mm here: The gap between the lenses, over your nose. A bridge that is too wide slides down; one that is too narrow leaves marks.
CTemple120 to 150 mm here: The arm, from the hinge to the tip behind your ear. We can bend the tip, but not add length, so this one has to be close.

The fastest route to the right size is the frame on your face right now.

Step one
Take off your glasses and look inside the left temple. You will find three numbers, often separated by a small square or a dash.
Step two
If nothing is printed, lay the frame flat and measure one lens across its widest point with a ruler, then the gap between the lenses.
Step three
Stay within two millimetres of those numbers. Bring the old pair in and we read it off for you while you wait.

Low-bridge fit

If your frames slide down, rest on your cheeks or leave the lashes brushing the lens, the bridge sits too high for your nose rather than too wide. The low-bridge frames have a shallower bridge, deeper pads and slightly wider temples, so the weight stays where it belongs.
